A tense thriller series that fans have warned ‘will make every parent watching uneasy’ has rocketed up the Netflix charts after being released on the streaming service.
The drama, first released in 2012 on ITV, has drawn comparisons with Emmy Award-winning series Adolescence, which was released by Netflix earlier this year.
Fans of the hit series, which followed a young boy accused of murdering a female classmate and the fallout for his family, friends and community, have been rushing to watch A Mother’s Son, which stars the likes of Martin Clunes and Nicola Walker.
The series tells the story of a sleepy Suffolk town, where schoolgirl Lorraine Mullary goes missing and is later found murdered.
The brutal death throws the town into chaos, especially recently blended family Rosie and Ben, played by Hermione Norris and Doc Martin’s Martin, 63, and their four children.
Rosie soon becomes concerned that her son Jamie, played by Alexander Arnold, has lied about his whereabouts on the night of the murder.

A show synopsis teases: ‘When she finds a stained pair of trainers hidden in his bedroom, she worries the stains might be blood.
‘As the investigation continues, relationships in the family become strained. Jamie turns for support to his father David (Paul McGann).
‘But Rosie finds she cannot suppress the growing fear that her son might be guilty of something truly terrible.’
When the series first hit screens, it received high praise from critics, with The Guardian describing it as ‘tense, absorbing and thrilling’.
Other outlets echoed the sentiment, with The Telegraph adding the ‘taut, psychological thriller will have left every parent who watched it feeling uneasy, maybe even culpable’.
Since it’s re-release on Netflix, the show has gone on to climb the charts, and now sits at second place on the most-watched TV series in the UK this week.
Taking to reviews sites online, fans praised the drama as ‘terrifying’ and ‘thought-provoking’.
One penned: ‘Very compelling viewing. Yes it isn’t an all-action drama, yes, the build-up of tension is slow, but it’s steady, relentless, and, I thought, very effective.

When the series first hit screens, the ITV series received high praise from critics
‘Perhaps it’s the kind of thoughtful, thought-provoking drama that isn’t likely to be wildly popular with a mass audience, but it certainly left an impression on me. Two days after watching it I was still wondering “What would I have done?”.’
Another agreed: ‘Really, really, hard, and heart wrenching.
‘The way the story developed was very realistic and provided just enough suspense and doubt. I can imagine every parent would dread such a thing ever happening to them and pray that it never does.’
A third penned: ‘‘Brilliant writing with lots of twists and turns and great acting too.’
It follows on from the popularity of Adolescence, which became one of the streaming service’s most-watched show when it was released earlier this year.
Fifteen-year-old star Owen Cooper made history after becoming the youngest-ever male Emmy winner as the show cleaned up at a glittering ceremony.
The Warrington-born teenager won Best Supporting Actor for his breathtaking performance as Jamie Miller in the four-part Netflix show that was filmed when he was just 14.
The series, which centres around schoolboy Jamie, follows his story when he is accused of murdering a female classmate after seeing extreme and misogynistic content online.

Adolescence reached 24.3million views in just the first four days of its release – and has been praised for highlighting the online radicalisation of young men and boys.
It went on to average 45million views per month after it became a must-watch for parents and teenagers around the world.
Many fans have begged for a second season of Adolescence – but an insider has hinted that if a series two was secured, it might not focus on Jamie’s case.
A source told The Sun: ‘Execs are thrilled by the results and acclaim for Adolescence.
‘It’s seen as a format that can run and run, at least to a second series if not further, as it could take in a different teen issue each series.
‘The topic has resonated with viewers because it taps into parents biggest fear and there’s plenty of scope for more in the same vein.
‘Stylistically, the one-take creative approach could become the hallmark of the series. It’s one of the aspects which has got everyone talking.’
A Mother’s Son is available to stream now on Netflix.
