Netflix viewers are racing to watch a British crime drama that has drawn comparisons to the smash-hit series Adolescence.
First released on ITV in 2012, A Mother’s Son was created by Chris Lang, who would go on to create Unforgotten.
It followed the disappearance of Suffolk schoolgirl Lorraine Mullary, who goes missing and is later found murdered.
Her brutal death throws her sleepy market town into turmoil, including the recently merged family of Rosie (Hermione Norris) and Ben (Martin Clunes) and their four children, the former who becomes concerned her son Jamie (Alexander Arnold), is lying about where he was on the night of Lorraine’s murder.
It was teased of the two-part series: ‘When she finds a stained pair of trainers hidden in his bedroom, she worries the stains might be blood.
‘As the investigation continues, relationships in the family become strained. Jamie turns for support to his father David (Paul McGann).

‘But Rosie finds she cannot suppress the growing fear that her son might be guilty of something truly terrible.’
In its review, The Guardian said the show was ‘tense, absorbing and thrilling’.
The Telegraph said it was a ‘taut, psychological thriller that will have left every parent who watched it feeling uneasy, maybe even culpable’.
Meanwhile The Huffington Post said that it needed ‘another plot twist or two to make it a really satisfying watch’.
This week it was added to Netflix, where it’s currently the second most-watched TV series on the streaming platform in the UK.

‘I found A Mother’s Son to be very compelling viewing,’ user hillrosemary posted on IMDB. ‘Yes, it isn’t an all-action drama, yes, the build-up of tension is slow, but it’s steady, relentless, and, I thought, very effective. Perhaps it’s the kind of thoughtful, thought-provoking drama that isn’t likely to be wildly popular with a mass audience, but it certainly left an impression on me. Two days after watching it I was still wondering “What would I have done?”.
‘The way the story developed was very realistic and provided just enough suspense and doubt. I can imagine every parent would dread such a thing ever happening to them and pray that it never does,’ clynn05 shared.
‘Brilliant writing with lots of twists and turns and great acting too,’ xmaddaybaby1966 added.
A Mother’s Son also stars Nicola Walker (Unforgotten), Paul McGann (Doctor Who), Alexander Arnold (Skins), Ellie Bamber (The Serpent), Annabelle Apsion and Charles Daish.
A Mother’s Son is streaming on Netflix.
