The trailer shows a couple walking through the woods before being violently attacked by a mystery person dressed up in a doll’s outfit.

The makers have teased it to be “nightmare fuel” and “the scariest movie yet in the great chainsaw massacre tradition”.

The synopsis reads: “A young woman, Macy, fights for survival after being abducted by a deranged, monster-like figure who wants to raise her as their child.”

One critic from Film Ireland has issued a vomiting warning, saying: “Dolly is the kind of midnight movie that makes you belly-laugh at least once…right before making you regret having a stomach.”

The Rod Blackhurst film is based on his 2022 short film, Babygirl, with Bradon Weavil co-writing it with him.

American Pie’s Stifler, aka Seann William Scott, appears in the frightening flick.

Other cast members include Fabianne Therese as the young woman Macy, Russ Tiller as Billy and Kate Cobb as Rachel.

The film had its world premiere at the Fantastic Fest in September and it looks like those who have already seen it are loving it.

It has a 70% Tomatometer rating on Rotten Tomatoes from 50 reviews already.

One review reads: “Dolly is a garishly good little slasher that leans into nostalgia and its inspiration just enough, without getting lost in the sauce, which these throwbacks tend to fall victim to.”

Another says: “You’ll gasp, you’ll laugh, you’ll scream in disgusted delight at every nasty revelation in Dolly.”

Someone else pens: “Dolly amps up the guts and gore of yesteryear to make a throwback isolationist horror sure to delight the bloodthirsty.”

Fans are clearly looking forward to watching Dolly as they’ve been taking to Reddit to share their thoughts.

One social media user commented: “I’m very much looking forward to it. I like that the trailer doesn’t give away a lot in terms of the plot, so that’s hooked me in.”

Another expressed: “The director did an ama here a while back that was pretty interesting. I’m looking forward to seeing it.”

Somebody else wrote: “hopefully this one lives up to the hype.”

Director Richard has teased: “Dolly is an elegant and twisted fairy tale born out of a deep love of gritty genre films and wanting to see something bonkers that a 13-year-old me would pine to rent (somehow) from the local video store (that was also the jewelry and appliance repair store) in rural upstate New York,

“I knew this film needed to have a strange, deranged beating heart not just for our protagonist, Macy, but the titular Dolly, who I hope is a shockingly complex and ultimately oddly sympathetic figure – and a character who will bring much madness to audiences for years to come.

“Because as outsiders, this film is a renewed investment in our ethos as filmmakers, our proud tribe of misfits, and our families, especially our children, who I hope never meet a life sized, blood-soaked doll in the woods.”

Dolly is in cinemas from Friday 6 March.
