A new British crime drama has been branded ‘as good as Broadchurch‘ – having racked up a perfect 100% Rotten Tomatoes score.
Under Salt Marsh takes place in Morfa Halen – a fictitious remote coastal village in north-west Wales threatened by rising sea levels.
Jackie Ellis (Kelly Reilly), a former detective turned teacher, finds the body of one of her young students after an apparent drowning.
Joining her is Detective Eric Bull (Rafe Spall), Jackie’s former police partner, who has a failed investigation under his belt.
The pair believe these two cases may be linked in some way and set out to uncover the truth.
Meanwhile, the cast also includes Jonathan Pryce, Naomi Yang, Harry Lawtey and Mark Stanley.

It has been compared to the acclaimed ITV crime drama Broadchurch, which starred Olivia Colman and David Tennant
In a review for Sydney Morning Herald, Craig Mathiseon described Under Salt Marsh as ‘good as Broadchurch’.
Starring David Tennant and Olivia Colman, this ITV crime drama ran from 2013 to 2017 to critical acclaim.
It also spawned a US adaptation titled Gracepoint, in which Tennant appeared as a different character.
Fans and critics appear to be enjoying Under Salt Marsh, with the show currently having a perfect score on aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes.
One viewer wrote on X: ‘under salt marsh is really good so far, people complaining about it being slow annoy me like we are learning more about the town and people for a reason. Kelly Reilly is phenomenal as always.’
Another added: ‘Started under salt marsh so far so good Kelly Reilly is such a good actress.’
A third said: ‘First two episodes of Under Salt Marsh are excellent.’
The Guardian’s Lucy Mangan penned: ‘With a little leap of faith, viewers can surely look forward to a compelling, psychologically astute thriller that manages to weave a thoughtful meditation on the ramifications of isolation and suffering round its narrative poles.’
It comes as ITV fans previously hailed a new crime drama series as the ‘best thing on TV’ and ‘better’ than popular BBC series Happy Valley – as the murder mystery left them gripped.
After The Flood returned for its second series earlier this year, and stars Peaky Blinders actress Sophie Rundle as leading lady Jo Marshall.
The series, set in a small rural town plagued by horrifying floods, follows Constable Jo as she investigates a murder investigation in the area after finding an unidentified body in the fictional town of Waterside.
Following on from the story of the first series, the new episodes see the policewoman in a new role as detective, and tackling another ‘baffling’ new murder case – one that’s much closer to home.

The storyline sees Morfa Halen – where Under Salt Marsh takes place – being threatened with rising sea levels

This time, the climate change based drama also pulls focus on the threat of moorland fires – as things heat up in the Yorkshire town.
The summary reads: ‘As tensions simmer in Waterside amid the rising threat of moorland fires and the subsequent risk of further flooding, a body is discovered in bizarre circumstances.
‘Jo’s race to stop the killer brings her into direct conflict with powerful and influential forces within the town, ultimately drawing her into an investigation that becomes deeply personal.
‘One that will require her to operate in secret if she is to have any hope of rooting out the corruption that has blighted the town’s police force – and her own family – for decades.’
The series stars the likes of Olivier nominee and Bridgerton actress Lorraine Ashbourne and Life of Mars‘ Philip Glenister – and is written by BAFTA-nominated Mick Ford.
Under Salt Marsh airs on Sky Atlantic and is available to stream on NOW.
