Netflix fans have been left raving over a ‘masterclass in modern horror’ as a hit film left them ‘shaken to their very core’ with the ‘scariest scene they’ve ever seen’.
The movie, which was first released in 2013, features a star-studded cast including Interstellar actress Jessica Chastain and Game Of Thrones‘ Nikolaj Coster-Waldau.
Mama, which is directed by horror film legend Andy Muschietti, who is also behind the likes of It and It Chapter Two, tells the story of two young girls who lose their parents in a series of horrific events.
On the day their parents pass away, the orphaned children vanish into the woods, prompting a frantic search by their Uncle Lucas (Nikolaj) and his girlfriend Annabel (Jessica).
The girls are drawn deeper into the forest where they’re raised by a dark entity – and are found alive in a decaying old cabin five years later.
Rescued by their uncle, they try to start up a new life, but as Annabel tries to introduce them to normality, it becomes apparent something isn’t right.

The mysterious entity ‘Mama’ still has a presence in the lives of the girls – after wandering the woods following her own tragedy in her past life.
Fans have gone wild over the film, which has been uploaded to Netflix to stream, and despite its mixed-reviews from critics, viewers say it’s worth the second chance.
Taking to reviews site Rotten Tomatoes, one reviewer penned: ‘I could happily sit through twenty turkeys to find one diamond like this. A masterclass in modern horror.’
Another added: ‘I have seen many, many horror films in my lifetime. But I have rarely (if ever) seen one that has touched me so deeply, rewarded me so profoundly, and at the same time managed to scare the ever-living s*** out of me so many times in one night.
‘Mama has left me shaken to my very core, in so many good ways.’
Someone else continued: ‘Mama is possibly the scariest film I have ever seen, but also one of the most touching, well filmed and memorable stories in a very long time.
‘More ghost story than fairytale, it’s one that is sure to haunt me for all time, and I will think twice before I turn out the lights tonight.’
On IMDb, another fan wrote: ‘I wish there were more movies like Mama.

‘This has become one of my favourite horror movies over the years, one I keep turning to as a prime example of what the horror genre should be.’
As someone else asked: ‘Why is this movie so underrated? Mama wasn’t terrible like everyone says. It was so good! The ending was super emotional and wtf-ish.’
It comes after an award-winning survival series has been made free to stream on ITVX after leaving fans ‘screaming, crying and throwing up’ over the ‘traumatic’ scenes.
Thriller Yellowjackets, which premiered on US service Showtime in 2021 and is available on Paramount+, follows a high school football team whose plane crashes into the Canadian wilderness.
Based in the 1990s, the series, which has won over 20 awards and gained over 100 nominations, details the trauma they face from the accident in the decades that follow.
It stars the likes of Two and a Half Men’s Melanie Lynskey, The Addams Family’s Christina Ricci, Unforgettable’s Tawny Cypress and Natural Born Killers’ Juliette Lewis as the now grown-up survivors.
While their younger versions are played by Sophie Nélisse, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Sophie Thatcher, Sammi Hanratty, Courtney Eaton, and Liv Hewson.
Created by the minds behind hit series Narcos, Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson, the majority of the action picks up 25 years after the accident that saw them fighting for their lives in the wilderness.

The drama, which currently has three seasons and a fourth in the making, has now been uploaded to ITVX to be streamed online by viewers in the UK – with seasons one and two available from February 15.
Announcing its debut on UK screens, ITV said: ‘The award-winning horror drama survival series Yellowjackets drops on ITVX next month, making it the exclusive UK free-to-air destination for the hit US series.’
Fans were left ‘screaming, crying and throwing up’ after Paramount Plus dropped the trailer for the much-anticipated third series.
Viewers couldn’t contain their excitement as they shared their reactions on X, formerly known as Twitter, over the bloody wilderness scenes.
One penned: ‘I can’t breathe,’ as another chimed in, dubbing the series ‘beautifully deranged’: ‘Screaming, crying and throwing up.’
A synopsis for season three reads: ‘As summer arrives, the Yellowjackets face a fragile victory, the brutal winter that nearly claimed them is finally behind them, but distrust in leadership and tension within the team jeopardise their chances of being rescued.
‘In the present, long-buried secrets from their pasts begin to surface. As the women fight to keep their lives from unravelling, they must confront a chilling question: who are they really, and what dark truths are they hiding from each other and themselves?’
