Netflix will revisit one of the most frightening true crime stories in America with a new documentary, Aileen: Queen of the Serial Killers. This will look at the life, crimes, and mentality of Aileen Wuornos, who was a notorious female serial killer.
A Deep Dive Into Aileen Wuornos’ Dark Legacy
Between 1989 and 1990, Aileen Wuornos went on a killing spree that resulted in the deaths of seven men in central Florida, claiming she was doing this in self-defense as she was a sex worker. It was a shocking story that sent shockwaves across America, not just because of how gruesome Wuornos’ acts were but also because she did not fit any form of a template for a typical serial killer.
A new documentary that will air on Netflix, directed by Emily Turner, will include unheard recordings, investigations, and footage that will give viewers access to Wuornos’ past motivations as well as the coverage of Wuornos during her trial, as seen in this image.
What to Expect
Unlike before, this upcoming documentary will look beyond the incidents that Wuornos was involved in, including the factors that led to this life of crime. It will feature insights from persons who investigated this case, as well as persons who knew Wuornos personally, including those who met with her during her time on death row.
What viewers will get, besides this chilling concoction of real audio, trial footage, and unseen elements from Wuornos’ final decade, is a more human, but no less terrifying, portrait of a woman who remains, perhaps evermore, America’s most fearsome female murderer.
When Is It Coming Out?
Aileen: Queen of the Serial Killers will hit screens on October 30, just in time for Halloween. What could be more apt, given Netflix’s history of releasing frightening documentaries during this period every year?
Why It’s Already Generating Buzz
For decades, the story has fascinated audiences, most notably through Charlize Theron’s Oscar-winning turn in Monster. But this forthcoming Netflix doc promises to sort out truth from myth, returning to this infamous story with a newfound perspective that might shock viewers who thought they knew everything about Wuornos. With its combination of psychological insight, actual interviews, and compelling storytelling, it appears that Aileen: Queen of the Serial Killers has the makings of being one of Netflix’s most frightening true crime documentaries of the year.
