The film, from writer-director Joe Carnahan, sees the respective pair portray Dane Dumars and JD Byrne, two police officers based in Miami whose team stumbles across a large sum of cash.

Gradually, members of the team begin to lose trust in each other as every person fends for themself. As an external unit learns about the operation, a cat-and-mouse game begins as they all question who they can rely on.

Boasting a stacked supporting cast including Steven Yeun and Teyana Taylor, the highly-anticipated crime thriller is now finally available to stream worldwide, with the film being released on Netflix today.

In terms of critical response, it looks like The Rip could be a hit, with Rotten Tomatoes currently reporting an impressive approval rating of 89% from 35 reviews. It will need more reviews logged to be certified fresh, but the omens are good so far.

“While his new film doesn’t reshape the mold, an ace cast led by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck and twisty plotting that bristles with paranoia and mistrust make it an entertaining watch,” said The Hollywood Reporter, who also called it “gripping”.

“This movie gets way too high on its own supply by the end, but for the better part of its runtime even the film’s silliest expressions of pathos are grounded by the emotional credibility of the relationship between its two leading men,” noted IndieWire.

“The Rip is ultimately a game for the boys, though, and taken as a piece of boisterous macho pulp, it’s a propulsive enough four-beers-in watch. A movie to be enjoyed on Friday night and forgotten all about by Saturday morning,” wrote The Guardian.

The Daily Beast was also full of praise, writing: “A rugged affair that’s canny and concussive enough to compensate for a somewhat deflating ending, it proves that its headliners remain cinema’s preeminent BFF duo.”

Carnahan, who previously worked with Affleck on 2006 action thriller Smokin’ Aces, said of the latest collaboration (via Tudum): “I’ve never had as easy an experience on a movie as I had on The Rip… [They] backed my decisions every step of the way.”

The Rip is streaming now on Netflix.
