Luther fans can rejoice because we are getting a brand new helping of the no-nonsense detective with a brand new film. And for everyone that felt cheated by the lack of Alice Morgan in the 2023 offering, Luther: The Fallen Sun, will also have another reason to celebrate.

It’s been confirmed Ruth Wilson will be returning as the fan favourite character when the film hits streaming site Netflix. Filming is set to start early next year, and the project is currently untitled.
The story sees a “new wave of brutal, seemingly random murders” hit London, with Luther “secretly called back into service”, according to Netflix. “But how can he save London when everyone on all sides seems to want him dead?”
Dermot Crowley will also be returning as DSU Martin Schenk while Jamie Payne will return to direct following his direction on the TV episodes and The Fallen Sun.

Jamie praised the upcoming movie, and creator Neil Cross, saying: “Neil has yet again, created a wonderfully dark tale to bring us all back together.
Netflix
“It’s a true joy to be back on the streets of Lutherland with the supreme talents that are Idris Elba and Dermot Crowley. I am also thrilled to be reunited with the brilliant and dangerous Alice Morgan played by the extraordinarily talented Ruth Wilson.”
Neil added: “Luther, Alice and Schenk are more than characters to me, they’re family. I never stop wondering where they are, what’s become of them… and what horrors might be stirring in the shadows of London while Luther’s not around. So we decided to get together and find out what happens next.”
Luther began in 2010, running for five seasons, with the spin-off film being released in 2023.
Despite an explosive ending, Neil Cross hinted that we could be seeing Idris Elba don his famous coat once again, telling the Radio Times: “There are extraordinarily strong possibilities you might see him again.
BBC
“Is that the heaviest hint that’s possible to give without Netflix sending a trained assassin around to silence me? Yeah, there’s every chance you will meet him again.”
Idris has also spoken about a possible return, previously saying: “The coat is still waiting, yeah. Luther is my legacy project. It’s the character I’ve played the longest in my life; there are definitely still things I want him to do.”
Luther seasons one to five are available to stream now on BBC iPlayer. The Fallen Sun is available to stream on Netflix.
