Call the Midwife aired the exit of two characters

Call the Midwife has confirmed the sudden exit of two much-loved characters, and fans are heartbroken.

Last month, the show returned for a 15th series, set in 1971. As fans of the BBC drama will know, Sister Veronica (Rebecca Gethings) recently confessed to Geoffrey Franklin (Christopher Harper) her longing to have a child of her own despite her religious calling.

In a twist, she insisted that Geoffrey address her by her actual name, Beryl, before revealing, “I want a child. I want a child of my own to hold in my arms and keep safe, and cherish always. I want a child before it becomes impossible.”

Meanwhile, Dr Patrick Turner (Stephen McGann) and his wife, Shelagh (Laura Main), have been caring for baby Christopher since the disaster at the mother’s house in Hong Kong.

The two-year-old, who is the son of Esther Tang, May Turner’s biological mother, was diagnosed with a rare kidney cancer (Wilms tumor) and sent to the UK for chemotherapy treatment.

Sister Veronica has struck up a special bond with Christopher, offering him support and a hand in caring for the young boy.

During Sunday’s episode of Call the Midwife (February 1), the Turners were informed that Christopher needs a break in his cancer treatment as he is struggling with chemotherapy and being away from home.

The decision was made for Christopher to return to Hong Kong and receive his treatment at the British Army Hospital.

Sister Veronica was heartbroken as Christopher was to leave Poplar, before Shelagh asked the nun to escort him back to Hong Kong, and she instantly agreed.

The Turner family was all sad to see Christopher leave their care as Sister Veronica picked up the young boy and started their journey back to his motherland.

However, some viewers are convinced Sister Veronica will not return to Nonnatus House, given her bond with Christopher and her struggles with her faith.

Taking to X, one viewer asked: “Is Sister Veronica going to disappear with Christopher? … #CallTheMidwife.”

A second stated: “Well Sister Veronica isn’t going to come back is she (broken heart) #callthemidwife”, while a third chimed in: “That was a downbeat ending for once. I don’t see Sister Veronica returning #CallTheMidwife.”

“I really hate to think this is the end for Christopher, I thought sister Veronica was going to adopt him, and leave the order #callthemidwife”, added another.
