They’ve filmed some of television’s steamiest love scenes — but even professionals have their oops moments.
Caitríona Balfe recently opened up about one of the most unforgettable (and unintentionally hilarious) mishaps while shooting with her longtime co-star, Sam Heughan.

“There was one scene where we were so in the moment — everything choreographed, lights, crew, and all — and suddenly, I just felt something odd,” she said with a laugh during an interview. “Let’s just say Sam immediately went bright red.”
While Balfe didn’t elaborate on what exactly happened, she assured fans it was nothing inappropriate — just one of those awkwardly human moments that can happen during hours of filming intimate scenes.
“He was mortified, absolutely mortified,” she said, grinning. “But we both started laughing. You have to, otherwise it’s just too weird. We’ve known each other too long not to laugh about it.”
According to Balfe, the moment perfectly captures their on-set chemistry — equal parts comfort, respect, and chaos.

“We’ve been through everything — fake sweat, freezing water, wardrobe malfunctions. It’s all part of the job,” she added. “Sam is the most professional, kind man. But seeing him blush? That was priceless.”
Heughan, for his part, has admitted in the past that filming love scenes can be “incredibly technical and deeply awkward,” especially given how emotionally charged the show’s intimacy tends to be.
Still, fans have long noted that the duo’s chemistry feels remarkably genuine. Maybe that’s because, behind the camera, they’ve learned to embrace both the sensuality and the silliness of it all.
“If you can’t laugh through the awkward stuff,” Balfe said, “you’ll never make it through a decade of Outlander love scenes.”
