A MYSTERY man accused of abducting and killing a British toddler more than 50 years ago may finally be named.

Cheryl Grimmer was just three years old when she vanished from an Australian beach in 1970.

Her family had migrated to Fairy Meadow, New South Wales from Bristol about two years prior in search of a better life.

Both of Cheryl‘s parents, Carole and John, died without ever learning what happened to their daughter.

A year after Cheryl’s disappearance, a Manchester-born teenager confessed to the killing.

Known only by the codename “Mercury”, the man’s identity has never been revealed.

He was charged with murder in 2017 after his unverified 1971 confession resurfaced, but the trial collapsed.

A judge ruled the confession inadmissible because he was a minor at the time and had been interviewed without a parent, guardian or legal adviser present.

“Mercury”, aged 71, has since consistently denied responsibility.

Now, New South Wales Legislative Council MP Jeremy Buckingham is raising a motion in parliament on Wednesday to have a suppression order lifted, the Mirror reports.
