Rosie O’Donnell is the latest star to come clean about her experience with plastic surgery. On May 25, the actress published a new Substack post, revealing that she recently underwent a lower deep plane facelift after initially being opposed to it.

“I used to feel very strongly about facelifts,” O’Donnell, who also posted photos of her results on Instagram, began. “Not casually—morally. I had assigned myself as head of all women who would never ever. I thought it was a betrayal. Of feminism. Of aging. Of our team of women worldwide.”

After losing 50 pounds, the 64-year-old comedian said she had a change of heart and began “gathering information” about the surgery. Her youngest child, Clay, tried to talk her out of it.

“It was not subtle,” O’Donnell wrote of the 13-year-old’s response. “‘You earned your wrinkles.’ Which—first of all—rude. But also…correct.”

Clay reminded their mother of the young women who “look up” to her, but it was another comment that really “landed” with O’Donnell: “I wouldn’t be able to respect you if you did it.” This led her to delay the procedure for months, but after discussing it with friends, she ultimately decided to go through with it.

“If I’m teaching Clay anything, it can’t be that my body belongs to an idea either. Even a good idea. Even feminism,” O’Donnell continued. “I want them to grow up in a world where they don’t feel like they have to change but also knows they can, if they want to, without losing moral standing in their own life.”

O’Donnell admitted that the surgery “cost more money than [she’d] ever paid for a car,” but that she’s “happier than [she has] been in years.” Although “no one noticed” that she’d had work done, the former talk show host said this was “the best possible outcome.”

“I didn’t disappear, I didn’t become someone else—I just stopped arguing with the mirror. And maybe that’s enough,” she concluded.
