A ‘disgusting’ movie that introduces a new horror icon that fans will love has been quietly added to Netflix.

The 2024 horror film Abigail is now a part of the streamer’s extensive library. It’s cast includes British actor Dan Stevens, known for previous roles in Downton Abbey, The Guest and Beauty and the Beast.

He is joined by Kathryn Newton from Big Little Lies and Ant Man and the Wasp Quantumania, plus Breaking Bad’s Giancarlo Espisito, Department Q star Matthew Goode as well as Alisha Weir who previously took on the titular role in Matilda the Musical. Melissa Barrera, who starred in the most recent Scream titles, also stars.

According to Abigail’s synopsis, the story begins when a group of would-be criminals kidnap the 12-year-old ballerina daughter of a powerful underworld figure. They hold her for ransom in an isolated mansion, and need to watch her overnight will they wait for their $50 million pay off.

However, their plans start to unravel as the team of captors start to dwindle in numbers. One by one, they each start to discover, to their mounting horror, that they are locked inside with no ordinary little girl.

The film boasts an 84% rating on website Rotten Tomatoes, with many critics praising the title for its unique take on a familiar genre. As one reviewer penned: “Devilishly disgusting and effortlessly humorous, this bonkers bloodbath gives us a brand new monster icon to fall in love with.”

While another claimed: “Abigail’s unique premise reinvents the vampire movie, with innovation as fresh as What We Do in the Shadows. Bearing razor-sharp fangs, Abigail delivers a delicious dance with death.”

Fans were just as impressed with the critics, as one simply stated: “Heart-pounding, freaking hilarious, gore fest!” Another claimed: “Abigail is a fun and thrilling movie that mixes horror, mystery, and dark humour in a very entertaining way. The story is interesting and keeps you hooked with unexpected twists. The acting is strong, especially the young girl, who gives a creepy and memorable performance.”

They continued: “The movie has good visuals, scary moments, and a fast pace that never feels boring. It balances fear and fun really well. If you like horror movies with a fresh idea and good suspense, Abigail is definitely worth watching.”

Someone else posted online: “Abigail is as fun as you can get with a modern horror movie. With a perfect mixture of blood and comedy, this is a well balanced, well orchestrated film. Perfectly casted and perfectly paced, with some great fighting scenes, this movie is enjoyable for anyone that is a fan of vampires and horror movies in general. Great, unique film!”

While one person went as far to say: “One of the best vampire films! Melissa Barrera is an amazing actress, and knows how to bring a horror movie to life. If you loved her in the Scream films, then I definitely recommend seeing this one.”
