Conservationist Robert Irwin introduced the world to Cwtch, “the newest member of the Australia Zoo family, a gorgeous eastern grey kangaroo joey”.
The son of beloved Australian environmentalist Steve Irwin, Robert thanked the royal siblings for selecting such an appropriate name.
He said: “I am very proud to announce that my friends, the Wales family, helped us to name our beautiful new joey!”
Cwtch, pronounced “kutch”, is “the absolute perfect name for a joey kangaroo ’cause at this age they love a cuddle and they spend most of their time inside that pouch with their mum”, Irwin added.

“I want to say a particular thank you to Prince George, Prince Louis and Princess Charlotte for you help in finding this little one a brilliant name.”
He made the announcement in a joint Instagram post with the Prince and Princess of Wales.
The video announcement featured Robert in a sun-dappled patch of Australia zoo, surrounded by kangaroos hopping around.
One of the kangaroos has a joey in her pouch – the zoo’s newly named joey Cwtch.
Irwin added: “Thank you for your support with our wildlife conservation efforts. It is so important that we conserve all of our animals including the icons, the kangaroos.
“These guys play a very important role in the Australian bush. And out there in the ecosystem, they are just crucial.
“Cwtch is now proudly part of our family here at Australia Zoo.”
Robert has met William before, joining him on a trip to South Africa in 2024 for the Prince’s environmental Earthshot Prize.
The pair have formed a bond since then, due to their shared mission for conservation.
