The wife of AFL legend Tony Modra has revealed that he will not look as handsome as he once did following the horrific accident
The Australian football community, and AFL fans across the nation, are currently gripped by profound anxiety following news regarding the health of legendary figure Tony Modra. The 57-year-old former Adelaide and Fremantle star has been admitted to the hospital in critical but stable condition after being involved in a harrowing traffic accident this past Thursday afternoon in South Australia.
A Twist of Fate on a Fateful Road

The incident occurred while Modra was operating a cattle truck along a route near Victor Harbor, located just over an hour south of Adelaide. Amidst severe weather conditions characterized by intense, gusting winds, an unimaginable situation unfolded: a mature tree along the roadside was uprooted and crashed directly into the path of Modra’s vehicle.
According to accountings from his close friend and former Crows teammate, Mark Ricciuto—who has been in constant contact with Modra’s wife, Erica—the accident occurred with such velocity that the legendary player had absolutely no opportunity to react. Ricciuto shared the heartbreaking details with reporters, emphasizing:
“She wanted me to emphasise he’s been working his backside off for the family.”
He further clarified the circumstances of the incident to put an end to unfounded speculation:
“Yesterday he was nearly home, on Range Road, Back Valley down near Victor Harbor, it was extremely windy yesterday and a complete freak accident, a tree got uprooted and fell across the road right in front of him as he was driving on the correct side of the road, and it hit his windscreen. Just an absolute freak accident. He didn’t veer off, didn’t even get time to avoid it. He was doing the right thing — just to end the speculation out there.”
A Poignant Tribute from a Resilient Wife
Despite facing an overwhelming ordeal, Erica has remained focused on extending her gratitude to those who labored to save her husband’s life. Through Ricciuto’s remarks on Triple M, the public has gained insight into the dedication of the unsung heroes involved. Ricciuto recounted:
“(Erica) wants to thank the MFS (SA fire service) and the emergency personnel at the Victor Harbor Hospital who stabilised him and got him sorted until the intensive care team took control and looked after him.”
Erica also wished to offer a special acknowledgment to the first responders, Sarah and Anthony:
“Erica wants to say ‘a very big thank you’ to first responders Sarah and Anthony ‘who saved (Modra’s) life and helped talk her through while things were going down’.”
While his condition has stabilized, his wife also shared the sobering reality regarding the lasting physical impact he will face. Ricciuto, visibly moved, relayed Erica’s words:
“She said to me just before he’s not going to be the same good-looking Tony Modra, he’s going to have some scars. I said well he can be like us for once instead of being good looking as he always has been.”
The Legacy of an Artistic Soul
As the community awaits further positive developments, fans have been introduced to an unexpected side of “Mods” through a personal artistic project he had recently completed. Rather than penning a memoir as many stars often do, Modra chose to compose a song to pay tribute to the teammates and spectators who have supported him throughout his career.
Ricciuto, voice thick with emotion, shared his reflections on his friend’s unique character:
“Anyone who knows Mods it’s the last thing you thought Mod would do. He’s a different fella. He’s a great fella, one of my best mates. He didn’t want to write a book, he just wanted to write a song. He wanted to write a song for all the people he played with but more importantly all the people he didn’t play with, and he sent it to me to have a listen to. I liked it and we’re going to play it now. Erica said yeah, I think that would be good for Tony.”
The incident involving Tony Modra has drawn immense concern from the entire sporting world. The Adelaide Football Club issued a hopeful statement: “Our collective thoughts and prayers are with Mods and his family, and we are all hoping for the best.” Echoing these sentiments, Dockers coach Justin Longmuir also offered his well wishes, expressing hope that the legend will soon overcome the most difficult battle of his life.
