What’s Next for Dunk and Egg? A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Showrunner Offers a Rare Hint

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms co-creator Ira Parker teases fans with his ambitious plan for the Game of Thrones spinoff saga!

With the renewal of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, many fans are surely excited to see what’s next for Dunk and Egg. There are currently three novellas published, and there’s a plan to adapt all those stories to the screen. Now, showrunner Ira Parker shares his hopes for the franchise (via MovieZine):

If we got to do three, I would be thrilled. If we got to do all those novellas. The truth is, I would take Dunk and Egg all the way through until the end of their lives. George suggested that maybe me and him could just write outlines for the seasons if we would ever get beyond that.

This ambitious plan sounds promising, given the reception of fans toward the spinoff, as well as George R.R. Martin‘s satisfaction with the show. In fact, the author has more plans for Dunk and Egg, so this means that, even though we only have three books so far, it won’t be the end of it.

Ira Parker Reveals GRRM Gave Him More Than 10 Dunk & Egg Stories

Parker has discussed plans for the prequel saga and how much he wants to expand the series beyond Season 3. In a Reddit AMA, he confirmed to fans that he has enough material from Martin to make more than ten seasons of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

George gave me 10-12 stories in addition to the first 3.

He also assured fans that, in case HBO green-lights more installments and the show overtook the books, Martin will be heavily involved in the production. The famed fantasy author had been very active in supervising the show, telling Parker not to mess up the project and reminding him of the importance of a faithful adaptation.

These Dunk and Egg stories that remain unpublished aren’t a secret at all. In fact, Martin has long revealed his plans and even revealed he’s got six more novellas to write when he finds the time. He reminded himself again about this task in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter:

The big issue is that I have only written three novellas, and I have a lot more stories about Dunk and Egg in my f—king head. I’ve got to get them down on paper.

He began drafting the next novella at some point in the past, although we didn’t hear any more updates about it as Martin became very busy with Game of Thrones and The Winds of Winter.

After the success of Season 1, it only makes sense to keep the ball rolling. Expanding the series up to ten seasons, for example, would be creatively ambitious but also risk the story of falling into franchise fatigue. At its core, this is a character piece, not a sprawling epic.

It’s good that Martin would be willing to provide an outline, though having the whole finished story at hand is way better than relying on an ongoing narrative. Martin then needs to motivate himself to finish the entire thing.
