Gruesome new details were released Thursday in the death of a Grammy-nominated opera and gospel singer who was allegedly killed by his son at his Santa Monica home on Dec. 8, 2025.

The death of Jubilant Sykes, 71, was ruled a homicide caused by multiple stab wounds inflicted with a knife, according to a Los Angeles County medical examiner’s autopsy report obtained by Us Weekly.

A medical summary revealed that Sykes suffered at least 73 wounds, including 68 “sharp-force” injuries and five “blunt-force” injuries.

His alleged killer used a curved knife with a blade measuring approximately 9 inches long and 2 inches wide, according to the report. Sykes was also reportedly struck with a 10-pound dumbbell.

Sykes was pronounced dead inside his home shortly after police arrived.

His son, Micah Sykes, 31, was arrested at the scene and later charged in connection with the killing.

The report also included details about Sykes’ final moments from his wife, Cecelia Sykes, who told authorities that “her son, who has a documented history of mental illness, had stabbed and killed” her husband.

According to the report, Cecelia Sykes was in the shower when she heard Jubilant yell for her to call 911.

“When she came out of the shower, she saw their adult son standing over (Jubilant) stabbing him with an apparent artifactual sharp edge weapon,” the report stated.

Micah Sykes has remained in custody without bail since his arrest in December. He’s being charged with murder as well as infliction of injury on a vulnerable victim.

His next arraignment is reportedly scheduled for August.

Jubilant Sykes was an American baritone singer who performed internationally in opera, concert productions and musicals, while also recording and performing contemporary worship music.

A recording of Leonard Bernstein’s Mass, featuring Sykes in the role of the Celebrant, earned a Grammy nomination for Best Classical Album.

The acclaimed vocalist collaborated with artists including Julie Andrews, Renée Fleming and Josh Groban, and performed at venues around the world, including New York’s Carnegie Hall and stages in London and Berlin.
