Adapted from an enormously popular series of books by Swedish author Viveca Sten, the television programme is based on the murder mystery novels Hidden in Snow and Hidden in the Shadows.
The compelling narratives belong to the niche Nordic noir genre, which features crime fiction typically told from a police perspective, set against a Scandinavian or Nordic backdrop.
Launched in 2025, The Åre Murders series brings these cherished stories to the screen, following a cast of fascinating characters. At the centre of the programme is a detective named Hanna, who, following the collapse of her relationship, takes a leave of absence and escapes to her sister’s holiday home in a Swedish ski resort called Åre.

As the pair of detectives delve into the snowy Swedish town, the truth reveals a sinister network of human traffickers and heartbreaking family secrets.

The role of Hannah is portrayed by renowned Swedish actress Carla Sehn, with Kardo Razzazi playing detective Daniel. The cast also includes Amalia Holm Bjelke, Charlie Gustafsson and Frida Argento in this Swedish production that can be viewed with English subtitles or dubbed versions.

According to WhatsonNetflix, The Åre Murders is expected to return for a second series, due to land at some stage in 2026, featuring two entirely fresh cases for the detectives to tackle. While no formal confirmation has been issued regarding further development of the narrative, supporters remain eagerly expectant.
