Formula One will see the Turkish Grand Prix make its comeback in 2027 following a five-year break. The Istanbul Park circuit will once more deliver an exciting race on the F1 schedule, with confirmation of its return to the calendar announced on Friday.

Originally staged from 2005 to 2011 before being brought back in 2020 and 2021, the third chapter of the legendary race will kick off in the 2027 season and will stay on the calendar for the following five years. F1’s official X account also confirmed the news with a post that read: “The Turkish Grand Prix will return to the calendar from 2027 as part of a new five-year agreement.”

The worldwide launch of the Turkish Grand Prix took place on Friday in Istanbul, with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan unveiling the event. Speaking at the occasion, Erdogan said: “The return of the Turkish Grand Prix to the Formula 1 calendar is a victory for Türkiye’s passion and belief in sport.

“The Formula 1 races to be held at Istanbul Park for five years will support Istanbul’s leading position in the world.” The Istanbul circuit layout spans 5.338km and features the notorious Turn 8 – considered one of the most legendary and demanding corners in F1.

It is a multi-apex, lightning-fast left-hander which Lewis Hamilton famously described as a “great corner” during the 2011 running of the race. Previously describing the distinctive challenge that Turn 8 presents to drivers, Hamilton said: “You enter it on full throttle, and once in it is a corner where you are continuously building up lateral G-force.

“And you really have to be quite precise with the line that you take. It is also important how much minimum speed you carry through the whole corner, as you carry it all the way down the next straight.”

There have been nine Turkish grands prix in F1 history, with 2007 world champion Kimi Raikkonen triumphing in the inaugural race back in 2005. Brazilian icon Felipe Massa then stamped his authority on the Istanbul Park circuit during his time at Ferrari, claiming three consecutive victories between 2006 and 2008.

Jenson Button became the first British winner of the race during his championship-winning season in 2009, with Hamilton following suit with a victory in 2010. Sebastian Vettel secured the honours in 2011 as he clinched back-to-back world titles with Red Bull.

Following an eight-year hiatus, the race returned in 2020 and 2021, with Hamilton claiming his second Istanbul triumph before then-Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas going on to become the last ever winner of the Turkish Grand Prix.
