Fans of Love Island have been left less than impressed with the show’s biggest twist just before the final.
The winner of ITV’s dating reality show’s 13th season will finally be revealed live tonight (July 27). It comes after eight weeks of dramatic twists, turns, and plenty of love triangles along the way.
Last night’s instalments saw all previously dumped Islanders return to the villa to have their say before the last episode. Viewers saw them stand up around the fire pit as each, one by one, voted to eliminate one couple they did not believe deserved a place in the final.
In what was at times a tense process, with some questioning the dumped stars’ decisions, the result was clear. The two who received the most votes and were therefore dumped from the island were Samraj and Mica.
However, that was not all, as Samraj received a surprise text message while packing his bags. It told them that only three couples could make it to the final, and they had to choose one to leave with them.

A preview for scenes set to air during the final were shown as Samraj says they have to ‘forget about friendships’ and Simba looks devastated as he receives their decision via text.
However, this huge twist has not gone down well with all fans of the show. One dedicated viewer took to the show’s subreddit to debate it, under the heading: “Not including the public in important decisions has hurt this season more than anything else.”
They explained that twists like this happen all too frequently, with dumped couples and Islanders given ‘too much power’ to impact the gameshow element of the series. This has also been felt in the few public votes this year.
The original poster also said: “In reality TV, the recipe for success is simple in my eyes: have a good casting, good storylines, and get the public as much involved as you can.
“The public was nowhere to be found this year. We voted like what, 3-4 times this year, and the only time we made the dumping was Priya and Aidan, I think. I remember watching LI UK season 5 when he had the power to send Tommy on a date with Molly, and it was just so clever, we could have brought a couple back or given immunity for the final to our favorite couple, like so many things, and we just had nothing.”
They concluded by acknowledging the public’s favourite could miss out on a place in the final altogether: “It’s possible that we’re going into a final where we won’t have Ellie who was voted favourite girl the 1st time, Julia who was voted favourite couple and favourite girl the 2nd time and Lorenzo who was voted favourite couple and favourite boy both times so why would people ultimately tune in every day if they can’t express their opinion through voting?”

Another fan agreed as they replied: “I agree. This is a stupid twist. I hope Mica and Aamraj choose to dump Yas and Tommy because it is the only right choice given the whole (ex)girlfriend situation. I don’t even want Julia and Lorenzo to win, I’m rooting for Angie and Simba, but it’s mad stupid if we’ll have a finale without the favourite couple. For me, it’ll make me tune out of next season’s because why bother watching if my vote won’t matter at all?”
Someone else shared a similar view: “So Julia and Lorenzo topped every vote they were in, both individually and as a couple, and now they might not even be finalists. Great choice, production.”
However, a regular viewer of the US version seemed to prefer the UK iteration’s method. They commented: “As someone coming from the US, I hope they adopt this less public voting format. We can’t get anything right over here.
“I thought this UK season had the perfect number of public votes. And I thought the types of public votes gave the islanders enough insight into how the public was feeling without giving the public actual control over who left.”
