Married At First Sight bride Rachel Gilmore has revealed her relationship with Steven Danyluk went south right after their “fairytale” final vows.

The finale aired on Tuesday night and the pair struggled to hold back tears as they confirmed they wanted to stay together after the experiment.

But that happy moment apparently didn’t last long, and in the three weeks between the final vows being filmed and the reunion dinner party, they had broken up.

Rachel dropped this surprising news on Abbie Chatfield’s It’s A Lot podcast about how her relationship unravelled “nearly immediately”.

“On the last commitment ceremony, I expressed my concern that Steven was going to go back to his normal life, and I would become a burden and it’s going to be easier to let me go, which I very much feel like that’s what’s come to fruition,” she said.

She said Steven came to visit her in Melbourne shortly after their final vows, but the trip ended up being very “awkward”.

Earlier in the season, Rachel toured Steven’s home and soaked up his passions like fishing and boating.

But when it came time for Rachel to show her husband the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), which is one of her favourite places in the city, apparently all he had to say was “cool”.

That devastated her.

“It’s been so much part of my narrative and one of my hobbies and passions… I literally had to stop myself from crying… I wanted to walk around it with him… so it was a very confusing time for my head and my heart,” she said.

Rachel had told Steven she was prepared to pack up her life for him, but that reaction sparked huge questions for their future.

Things went from bad to worse, as the 35-year-old claimed Steven was very focused on his work after the final vows had finished.

But she alleged that a lot of their discussions revolved around what he wanted to do and what opportunities he could jump on.

“I said, ‘Do you think about our relationship when you’re thinking about these things?’ And it was, ‘Well, of course I do Rachel,’” she recalled.

What was the ‘final nail’ in Rachel and Steven’s relationship?

Fast-forward to the reunion, and that’s when the “final nail in the coffin’ landed.

They arrived both wearing their wedding rings but Rachel sensed the night wasn’t going to end well.

“[MAFS expert] John [Aiken] got quite direct with him,” Rachel said.

“And [Steven] was asked repeatedly, ‘Do you want to be with Rach? Do you want to be with this woman?’ He’s like, ‘You’ve got to stop stringing her along. Do you want to be with her?’ And [Steven’s] response was always, ‘Yes, but…’”

According to her, after Steven was grilled by the experts on why he wasn’t trying to make it work, he said it would probably just be easier to “put a bullet” in their relationship.

This apparently came just before Rachel told him that she was in love with him and was keen to forge on with their relationship.

“I had such an understanding and support for his insecurities and his quirks and all these things,” Rachel told Abbie.

“He didn’t love me for me, because he didn’t love me.”

Rachel said that as much as she still respects Steven and cares for him, he is a very different man to the one she fell in love with.
