King Haakon and Queen Mette-Marit wave from the balcony

They’re here – King Haakon and Queen Mette-Marit have appeared on the balcony and are waving to the public.

The new King and Queen came out first, followed by their children, Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra and Prince Sverre Magnus.

Then Queen Sonja, 89, followed, looking emotional but supported by her family as she remembered her late husband.

Queen Mette-Marit and Princess Ingrid placed a supportive hand on either of her arms.

The public flocks to the Palace ahead of balcony appearance

We are shortly expecting the new King Haakon to appear on the balcony at the Royal Palace of Oslo.

As the barriers were lifted, crowds ran to the front of the palace to catch a glimpse of the royal family.

People previously gathered around the Castle Square, rather than on the Square itself, VG reported.

Queen Sonja wore an elegant veil to her late husband’s funeral on Wednesday, while Queen Mette-Marit and Princess Ingrid Alexandra also attached netted veils to their ensembles.

So, why do royal women typically wear veils to funerals?

Though they are not obligatory, royal women traditionally wear black mourning veils at the funeral of a sovereign.

They are both symbolic and practical, as a sign of respect and to shield the wearer from public scrutiny.

Typically, they are made from lace, tulle, or fine netting material, meaning the wearer can still see through them.

However, the wearing of the veils is complex, and there are a multitude of reasons why they could be worn.
