Austin Police Department Police Chief Lisa Davis confirmed that an unidentified “male suspect” in the shooting was shot dead by police. No other suspects have been mentioned at this time.

“This incident started with calls for a male shooting at Buford’s bar on West 6th Street,” said Davis. “Officers immediately transitioned, came over East 6th to West 6th Street and we’re faced with the individual with the gun and three of our officers returned fire, killing the suspect.”

The Austin Police Department (APD) advised people to “avoid the area” amid the incident in a statement on X.

The Austin Fire Department (AFD) responded to the scene along with the APD and Austin-Travis County EMS (ATCEMS). A motive for the incident has not yet been disclosed.

Austin Mayor Kirk Watson said at the press conference, “I’m very thankful for the speed with which our public safety officials responded to this. I don’t think there’s any question that it saved lives.”
