A woman has died after she was hit by a ute on the Pacific Motorway between Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

Police say initial investigations indicate the drivers of two vehicles had pulled over to exchange details following a minor crash on the Pacific Motorway, northbound, about 3:40pm yesterday.

The driver of one of the vehicles, a woman in her 30s, was struck by a white Isuzu dual-cab utility while returning to her car, police said.

The woman sustained critical injuries and was declared deceased at the scene.

The driver of the Isuzu, a man in his 30s, is assisting police.

Following the initial incident, a second crash involving multiple vehicles occurred in the northbound lanes of the highway.

The motorway northbound was closed to all traffic until just after 8:30pm.
