A 16-year-old boy shot dead in a drive-by shooting in Melbourne’s inner-north has been named.

In an official GoFundMe, the family of Ater Good revealed their hearts are “broken” at the teenager’s sudden death on January 3.

Ater was found by a police officer who went outside to investigate after hearing gunshots ring out at the intersection of Brunswick St and King Williams St ring shortly after midnight on January 3.

The teenager suffered life-threatening injuries and died at the scene despite the efforts of paramedics.

Phillip Good, Ater’s father, said the family had experienced an “unimaginable loss” with Ater’s passing.

“He was deeply loved by his family, cherished by his friends, and held a special place in the hearts of everyone who knew him,” Mr Good wrote in a GoFundMe fundraiser.

“As the eldest son, he carried great meaning within our family and leaves behind many siblings who will forever feel his absence.

“His passing has left our hearts broken and our family grieving a loss that words cannot fully express.”

“As a community, we believe in standing together during times of sorrow. We ask for your support, prayers, and love as we come together to honour his life, support his siblings, and surround his family with strength during this time. “

Victoria Police have said a silver SUV drove past and fired about two shots before driving off.

Detective Inspector Brett Meadows last week said another person was walking with the victim when the targeted attack unfolded.

“It was 12am, we’ve got two persons walking down the street when shots were fired from a moving vehicle at those two persons,” Inspector Meadows said.

“It certainly appears to be targeted.”

The pair walked past the police station before doubling back and walking past again.

The shooting took place almost across the road.

“The two boys who go past the station don’t stop. They don’t try and go into the police station. They’re not trying to call for help. They’re seen going past twice,” he said.

“They’re not moving in any sort of hurry, they’re just strolling down the street.”

He urged the other man to come forward.

“We’re asking that male person to come forward – we still don’t know who that is and we believe that male person can assist us with those inquiries and ascertain exactly what took place and why it took place,” Inspector Meadows said.
