The morning tranquility at Seascape Beach, California, on June 10, nearly descended into a bloody tragedy. A surfer identified as Rex, who has spent years frequenting these waters, unintentionally became the target of a shark’s “investigation” while patiently waiting for the perfect wave. It was only due to the keen observation of a drone operator from above that he escaped the imminent danger by a hair’s breadth.
The Stalking Beneath the Surface
At approximately 8:45 a.m., while Rex sat calmly on his board—completely unaware of the looming predator—a menacing form began to emerge from the murky water directly beneath him. An apex predator of the ocean was closing the distance with chilling precision.
Niche photographer Nick Bertocchini, who was piloting a drone nearby, inadvertently captured the breathless encounter. As the shark’s dorsal fin broke the surface, Rex suddenly realized the danger. Panic ensued as the surfer began thrashing wildly in the water, attempting to create a disturbance to escape. In a miraculous turn of events, the shark suddenly abandoned the pursuit and slipped back into the depths, leaving the surfer in a state of utter shock.
Warnings from Observers
Photographer Bertocchini, who is accustomed to filming along the coastline, shared that he has witnessed numerous similar encounters between surfers and marine predators. However, this particular incident stood out due to the creature’s intent. He emphasized:
“This one stood out because it appeared more investigative than the average encounter I typically see.”
He also expressed his immense relief regarding the outcome:
“I am glad the shark and surfer left without any further contact.”
According to observations from both Rex and Bertocchini, the frequency of shark sightings in this area has been visibly increasing, turning what was once a routine pastime into a dangerous gamble with fate.
The Haunting Shadow of Nearby Waters
In the wake of this alarming incident, the international public remains shaken by a severe attack that occurred at Coogee Beach in Australia earlier this week. A swimmer named Leah Stewart became the victim of a brutal assault by a “large” shark.
The scene of the incident was described as deeply harrowing, with emergency personnel finding the victim in a state of critical blood loss. Off-duty doctors on the beach rushed to provide immediate assistance, applying tourniquets to the victim’s limbs in a desperate attempt to staunch the flow of blood. Family updates later confirmed a heartbreaking reality: the loving mother suffered the permanent amputation of her arm following the attack.
ABC journalist Patrick Stack, who happened to witness the terrifying scene, could not hide his shock:
“Lots of people [were] swimming in the water when we heard a really chilling scream going out across the beach.”
