Prince Harry is hitting the slopes in Aspen before another sporting event.

The Duke of Sussex, 41, was seen skiing with his friend Nacho Figueras in the Colorado hot spot, as seen in photos published on Dec. 17 by Hello! magazine. Harry sported sunglasses, a helmet and ski gear for the winter day outdoors.

“Prince Harry was with Nacho for about four hours on the mountains. The pair spent the day skiing and enjoyed lunch together at one of the restaurants at the resort,” a source told the outlet. “Harry seemed happy and was also joined by a number of male friends on the slopes.”

According to the outlet, Meghan Markle, 44, and their children, Prince Archie, 6, and Princess Lilibet, 4, did not join the private ski trip, but the family will celebrate Christmas at home in Montecito, California, next week.

Prince Harry has been skiing since childhood, joining his family members in cold-weather destinations such as Switzerland for vacation. He also got to test an adaptive ski at the Invictus Games Vancouver Whistler’s One Year to Go celebrations in 2024.

On Dec. 17, Prince Harry was also seen watching a snow polo game in Aspen. According to Aspen Snow Polo’s Instagram page, he is set to compete on the Aspen Valley team for the St. Regis World Snow Polo Championship, taking place on Wednesday and Thursday. Meanwhile, Figueras seems to be the Duke of Sussex’s competition, on the St. Regis team with his two sons.

The outing marked a return to Aspen for Harry and Figueras. The Duke of Sussex and his friend, a 48-year-old former professional polo player from Argentina, previously competed together in the Sentebale Polo Cup at the Aspen Valley Polo Club in August 2022.

Prince Harry’s ski day marked his first public sighting in recent weeks, as he and Meghan have kept a low profile ahead of the holidays.

It also comes after Meghan made contact with her estranged father, Thomas Markle, for the first time in years after he had surgery to amputate his leg in the Philippines, where he now lives. A spokesman for the Duchess of Sussex said in a statement on Dec. 10 that a note was “safely” delivered to Thomas, 81, “with the support of reliable and trusted contacts.”

Meghan emailed her father on Dec. 5, as news spread of his operation. She had kept that reach out private, but after The Mail on Sunday reported on Dec. 6 that Thomas was “confused” by the claims and said that he had not received anything from Meghan, those close to her made her attempts public.

PEOPLE understands Meghan called several hospitals in an effort to locate her father, and her team has also sought clarification from those close to Thomas regarding the best way of contacting him as he recovers.

Meghan has been estranged from her father since shortly before her 2018 royal wedding.

The rift began after Thomas admitted to staging paparazzi photos and, according to Meghan, was not truthful with her about his communications with the press. She talked about the issue during her and Harry’s 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, saying at the time, “I’ve lost my father.”
