No Signs of Remorse: Man Accused of St@bbing Female Police Officer in the Neck Allegedly Ass@:ulted a Nurse While in Hospital Custody

A man accused of stabbing a female police officer in the neck during a violent confrontation in Adelaide’s north has also been charged with assaulting a nurse while under guard in hospital.

The 27-year-old man from Woodville Gardens — who remains in Royal Adelaide Hospital Intensive Care Unit — has been charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, aggravated threaten life, illegal use of a motor vehicle, carrying an offensive weapon, and assaulting a prescribed emergency worker (nurse).

Police said the accused man had yet to be medically cleared for them to interview him, but that the charges were laid ex parte — meaning without him being notified or present.

Police earlier revealed the accused man allegedly stabbed the female senior constable — a 39-year-old identified only as Jessie — after already being shot in the leg by her colleague.

The incident occurred when officers responded to multiple reports of a man armed with a large knife running into traffic on Main North Rd at Elizabeth East about 11am on Wednesday.

“The officer who was with Jessie was put in a situation where he had to discharge his firearm, he shot the offender, he’s continued on and stabbed Jessie in the neck,” Police Commissioner Grant Stevens said on Thursday.

Jessie remains in hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to stay several more days as she continues her recovery.

The police commissioner said the attack had shaken the policing community.

“Every police officer has the right to come to work, perform their duties and return home safely,” Stevens said. “Incidents involving serious violence against police officers can have profound and lasting consequences … the community rightly expects offenders to be held accountable.”

Stevens was among senior officers who visited the injured officer on Wednesday night, describing her as “in good spirits” and “incredibly lucky”.

Major Crime detectives, local investigators and the Internal Investigation Branch remain involved, with police again appealing for witnesses or dashcam from the Elizabeth East area around 11am on Wednesday.

SA Health has been contacted for comment regarding the condition of the nurse who was allegedly assaulted.
