Meghan Markle’s latest photo shoot may have taken inspiration from Princess Diana.

Following the release of the Duchess of Sussex’s interview and photo spread with Harper’s Bazaar, some eagle-eyed royal watchers noted that several of the pictures — snapped by Malick Bodian — bore a striking resemblance to photos Diana posed for throughout her life.

One image of Meghan, featuring her dressed in a white top and black pants while seated on the floor with her legs crossed, is a near match for a photo of Diana from a rarely-seen shoot she did with famed French photographer Patrick Demarchelier. The photos were unpublished prior to Diana’s death in 1997, but 15 years later, they were released in Paris Match magazine. (The spread also included a sweet photograph of Diana with a young Prince Harry!)

Another snap shows Meghan in an asymmetrical red dress, which parallels another Demarchelier photo, where the late Princess of Wales is seated on the floor in a red halter gown. She has one leg crossed over the other, creating a similarly asymmetric look.

The photo was taken by Demarchelier in 1994, but it gained traction as the cover image that Vogue used for their tribute issue following her 1997 death.

Another picture of Meghan, a black-and-white image showing her lounging on an oversized chair with her head resting on her hand, is a close comparison to a well-known image of Diana. The 1997 shot of the late royal lying with her head resting on her folded hands was taken by Mario Testino for Vanity Fair.

This is far from the first time that the Duchess of Sussex has matched her late mother-in-law. Back in February, she shared a video on her Instagram stories in which she was watering the garden at her Montecito, California, home. In the clip, Meghan was wearing a purple, crewneck Northwestern University sweatshirt, just like the one that Diana was photographed in during a visit to the gym in the final year of her life.

Diana got the sweatshirt during a visit to the Chicago-area institution in June 1996, just three years before Meghan would enroll in the school to earn a double major in theater and international studies.

In April, Meghan did her first-ever podcast interview, joining her close friend Jamie Kern Lima on her eponymous podcast. During their chat, Kern Lima brought up comments that Harry had made about how Meghan reminds him of his late mother.

“So Harry said publicly, ‘So much of what Megan is and how she is so similar to my mum. She has the same compassion. She has the same empathy. She has the same confidence. She has this warmth about her.’ How do you feel about him sharing that?” Kern Lima asked.

“It’s beautiful,” Meghan replied. “I wish I could have met her.”

In his 2023 memoir, Spare, Harry shared that he and Meghan first connected via text on July 1, 2016, what would have been his mother’s 55th birthday. He also wrote about taking his wife to visit Diana’s grave for the first time in 2022, the 25th anniversary of the fatal crash: “At long last, I was bringing the girl of my dreams home to meet mum.”

The couple’s ultimate tribute, however, may be their daughter. When Meghan gave birth to her and Harry’s second child on June 4, 2021, they decided to name her Lilibet Diana.
