YG and the Journey to Reclaim His Standing: A Costly Lesson from Kendrick Lamar

After a decade of dedicated work in the hip-hop scene, rapper YG is demonstrating a powerful transformation as he prepares to unveil his new studio album, The Gentlemen’s Club, on June 19. No longer just a hurried project, this is considered a manifesto for a new era for the Compton-native artist, kicked off by the single “GANG BIZNESS” released last week.

In a recent conversation with DJ Hed, YG candidly shared his desire to have his artistic contributions recognized. He admitted that during his 10 years in the game, his career seemed to lack the deserved recognition from prestigious award ceremonies.

“The goal of this album, I’m coming for my respect.”

“I know I did it to myself, so I gotta get this sh*t back up out the mud. So, as a songwriter, as an artist, I’m coming for respect.”

“I ain’t never got a BET Award nomination…for nothing. Not the BET Hip Hop Awards, I think I got one of those for “My N*gga” back in the day, but…for nothing, bro.”

The turning point in YG’s mindset came from the sincere advice of his fellow Compton star, Kendrick Lamar (K. Dot). YG confessed to Kendrick about how he used to release albums half-heartedly just to fulfill contractual obligations.

Kendrick Lamar immediately offered a profound wake-up call: “Bro, you ain’t never supposed to do that. Music cannot—you gotta give it your all every time.”

Reflecting on the past, YG admitted that he “f*cked up” and affirmed that with his upcoming project, he is “coming for everything” with his utmost dedication and seriousness.
