A young boy has died from his injuries two days after a five-car crash on a Melbourne freeway.
The 12-year-old was travelling in a Mazda 3 when it was caught up in the pile-up on the Monash Freeway near the Stud Road off-ramp in Dandenong North about 2pm on Sunday.
He was rushed to the Royal Children’s Hospital with serious upper and lower body injuries, where he died on Tuesday.
Two other occupants of the Mazda were also taken to hospital.
A 46-year-old woman from Sunbury remains in hospital in a critical condition as of Wednesday, while an 8-year-old girl suffered minor injuries.
Three of the four occupants in a blue Mitsubishi — a 68-year-old Campbellfield woman, a 39-year-old Glenroy woman and a 6-year-old girl — were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The occupants of a BMW, a Volkswagen Tiguan and a white Mitsubishi were not injured.
Police spoke to the driver of the BMW, a 34-year-old man from Berwick, and he was released.
The crash caused major traffic delays on the freeway with cars stuck in traffic for kilometres.
Detectives from the Major Collision Investigation Unit are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
