A couple were terrorised during a home invasion in NSW when a stolen car smashed through their front gate and was set alight.

The ute was driven into the property on Bocks Rd in Oakville, 49km northwest of Sydney, about 2am on Saturday.

A group of offenders got out of the car and began smashing the home’s windows before threatening the occupants — a man and woman aged in their 50s — with a gun and machete.

One of the residents told 7NEWS the group threatened to kill the couple if they didn’t open the door.

When police arrived, four people were seen running from the home while a fifth allegedly drove away in a hatchback.

Police gave chase, with the hatchback driver allegedly reaching a maximum speed of 120km/h in a designated 50km/h zone.

The car was followed to Fontana Dr in Gables however the driver managed to get out of the car and run away.

A major police search then began involving PolAir, the Dog Unit and Raptor Squad, which targets people involved in serious and organised crime.

Not long later a 17-year-old boy was arrested and charged with seven offences including special aggravated break and enter with intent — armed with dangerous weapon.

He remains before the court.

Police say they believe the current occupants of the home were not the intended targets of the home invasion.

The four other offenders remain outstanding, with police on Thursday releasing CCTV of two men they believe may be able to help with the ongoing investigation.

They were seen wearing black tracksuit pants and jumpers as well as surgical masks which covered their faces.

The men are described as being of Pacific Islander appearance, approximately 18-20 years old and about 175cm tall.
