The former Prince Andrew saddled up for a ride on the Saturday after the christening of his granddaughter, Athena Mapelli Mozzi, as his last remaining military title was removed.

On Dec. 13, King Charles’ brother, 65, was photographed horseback riding in Berkshire. The former Duke of York bundled up for the December ride, where he was pictured with a companion on horseback.

He was later seen driving from Royal Lodge, his residence in Windsor, which he has been ordered to move out of, after the morning ride.

The outing marked Andrew’s first appearance following the christening of his granddaughter Athena on Dec. 12. Princess Beatrice and Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi’s 10-month-old daughter was christened in a private ceremony at Chapel Royal at St. James’s Palace in London last Friday, which her parents, Andrew and Sarah Ferguson, attended but were not photographed at.

Andrew and Sarah, 66, also seemed to skip a London pub outing after the christening with Beatrice, Edo and other guests. The christening was the former couple’s first joint family event since King Charles stripped his brother of his royal titles in October.

It also emerged on Dec. 13 that the King’s brother, who is now known as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, has been stripped of his last remaining military title, with the rank downgraded.

“Following formal consideration, Defence Council have agreed the immediate reversion from the rank of Vice-Admiral to the rank of Commander (Retired) Royal Navy, the rank held on retirement from Regular Royal Naval Service by Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor. This decision aligns with such processes as to remove other styles and titles,” a spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence told The Times in a piece published on Saturday.

Defense Secretary John Healey previously confirmed in November that Andrew lost his honorary rank as vice admiral in the Royal Navy, but the update about the demoted rank is new.

It has been a turbulent season for Andrew, who announced on Oct. 17 that he was discontinuing use of his royal titles and honors as it distracted from the work of the King and the royal family. The shock statement came amid renewed scrutiny around the depth of Andrew’s connection to Jeffrey Epstein, the convicted sex offender who died while awaiting trial on federal conspiracy and sex trafficking charges in 2019.

Andrew, who has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing, stepped back from his working royal role in 2019 in 2019 following a BBC Newsnight interview about his connection to the American financier. In January 2022, Queen Elizabeth stripped her son of his military titles and patronages after a judge rejected his attempt to have Epstein victim Virginia Giuffre’s sexual assault lawsuit against him dismissed. Andrew then settled with Giuffre, who died by suicide in April, out of court for an undisclosed sum.

King Charles, 77, launched the process of stripping Andrew’s royal style, titles and honors on Oct. 30, and the transition was made official in a Letters Patent dated Nov. 3.

Andrew has also been ordered to move out of Royal Lodge, the 30-room mansion in Windsor Great Park where he was reportedly paying “peppercorn rent” for decades, and is heading to a private property on the Sandringham Estate.
