The Duchess of Sussex is still due to appear at the Sydney retreat next month
The publicist behind Meghan Markle’s forthcoming Australian retreat is embroiled in significant financial difficulties after her talent management company collapsed with debts exceeding half a million Australian dollars.
Gemma O’Neill’s firm, Gemmie Agency, entered voluntary liquidation in November, leaving the business owing $543,548 (£289,236) to the Australian Taxation Office alongside a further $3,300 (£1,756) to accountancy firm Jack Lawrence Accountants and Advisors.
Despite the insolvency proceedings, representatives for the Duchess of Sussex have confirmed she remains committed to appearing at the three-day “Her Best Life Retreat” taking place next month.
Ms O’Neill, who has been actively promoting the Sydney event, reportedly informed administrators on February 20 that she was unable to make any repayment contributions, citing an absence of personal savings and limited income.

The luxury weekend, running from April 17 to 19 at the InterContinental Sydney Coogee Beach, will welcome up to 300 women for what organisers have billed as the “ultimate girls’ weekend”.
VIP tickets are priced at £1,705, granting attendees a group photograph with the duchess at a gala dinner, front-row seating, and two nights’ accommodation at the five-star hotel.
Standard early bird packages retail at approximately £1,400, covering hotel stays, meals, alcohol, speaker sessions and wellness activities.
The event, organised by Ms O’Neill’s company Besties Australia alongside radio presenter Jackie O Henderson, will feature Meghan delivering a speech and participating in a question-and-answer session.

Discussions at the retreat are set to centre on themes of resilience and women’s empowerment.
She also disclosed that attempts to refinance her beachside Sydney apartment had proved unsuccessful.
Administrators from Grant Thornton Australia noted in a creditors’ statement that the agency’s debts stood in marked contrast to a seven-figure commission received from an unnamed major client between October 2023 and March 2024.
The insolvency report also references Besties Australia, the events company Ms O’Neill co-founded with Ms Henderson in October 2022, revealing that an $18,143 loan was made to the business.

Ms O’Neill reportedly disputed this entry, claiming her former accountant had recorded the transactions incorrectly.
The financial revelations emerged on the same day Ms Henderson became embroiled in an on-air dispute with her KIIS FM co-host Kyle Sandilands, a row that ultimately resulted in both presenters losing their $100million (£53million) contracts when the programme was axed.
The arrangement for Meghan’s appearance was facilitated by Markus Anderson, a longstanding friend of the duchess who famously organised her blind date with Prince Harry in 2016.
Ms O’Neill revealed that Mr Anderson contacted her while visiting Meghan’s Montecito residence to propose the Duchess as their headline guest.

Speaking about her initial hesitation, Ms O’Neill said: “I felt like I didn’t deserve her.”
She described Mr Anderson as “the bee’s knees and a top-notch human”, adding that his close friendship with Meghan convinced her the duchess would share similar qualities.
Ms O’Neill has spoken publicly of her admiration for the former actress, stating: “I have admired this woman and what she has endured, how she’s risen above it, and how she has demonstrated that a woman can be pushed down, and she can still rise.”
