After serving over 15 years behind bars, Harlem rapper Max B, born Charly Wingate, has officially been released from prison, according to HOT 97.
The rapper, widely known for his “wavy” sound and influential role in shaping New York’s melodic rap scene, was initially sentenced to 75 years in 2009 for his alleged involvement in a failed robbery that resulted in a fatality in New Jersey. His conviction was later overturned, and in 2016, he reached a plea deal reducing the charge to aggravated manslaughter—drastically cutting his prison term.
Max B had been hinting at his release for months. Earlier this year, during a call-in appearance on The Joe Budden Podcast, he confidently announced that he would be free by November 9, 2025 — a prediction that has now come true.
Confirmation of his release came from longtime friend and collaborator French Montana, who shared the news on Instagram with an emotional message: “CANT MAKE THIS UP! MY BROTHER REALLY CAME HOME ON MY B DAY! HAMDULILLAH WALKED IT DOWN! NO MORE FREE YOU.”

Born and raised in Harlem, Max B became a defining figure of the mid-2000s New York rap scene with hits such as “Wavy Crockett.” His unique delivery, charisma, and laid-back style — often referred to as “the wave” — heavily influenced artists including French Montana, A$AP Mob, and other rising rappers across the East Coast.
The rapper’s return marks the end of one of hip-hop’s longest-running incarceration stories and the beginning of what fans hope will be a major comeback. Messages of support have poured in across social media from both fans and industry peers celebrating his long-awaited release.
While Max B has yet to make a formal public statement, sources close to the artist suggest that new music and collaborations may already be in the works as he begins his next chapter in freedom.
