The Rip: When Greed Tests the Human Soul
1. The Plot: A Fateful Raid
The film is inspired by a shocking true event from 2016 in Miami, when Officer Chris Casiano and a Tactical Narcotics Team (TNT) discovered over $20 million in cash hidden in plastic buckets at a house in Miami Lakes.
In the movie, the story begins with the unexplained death of a female officer named Jackie, leaving the entire team in a state of confusion and gloom. Led by Lieutenant Dane Dumars (Matt Damon) and Sergeant J.D. Byrne (Ben Affleck), the team conducts a raid based on a confidential tip. Instead of drugs, they find a massive “pyramid” of cash. From this point on, the house becomes a “pressure cooker” of suspicion, where each member must face a choice: maintain their integrity or pocket a life-changing sum of money.

2. Performances: The Caliber of Hollywood Giants
Matt Damon (Dane Dumars): Damon delivers a high-stakes performance as a leader grappling with the grief of losing a child and the pressure of keeping his team from falling apart. He brilliantly portrays a calm yet calculating demeanor, serving as the psychological “anchor” for the entire film.
Ben Affleck (J.D. Byrne): In contrast to Damon’s composure, Affleck embodies a character who is hot-headed, instinctive, and ready to explode at any moment. Their real-life “brotherhood” is utilized to its full potential, creating sharp, emotionally charged dialogues.
Supporting Cast: Steven Yeun, Teyana Taylor, and Kyle Chandler do more than just provide backup; they play pivotal roles in creating a complex web of suspects, keeping the audience guessing about the true traitor until the very last minute.
3. Direction & Style: Realistic and Breathless
Director Joe Carnahan (The Grey, Narc) once again proves his mastery of the “old-school” crime thriller genre, which never feels outdated.
Action: The film avoids overusing CGI, focusing instead on realistic gunfights, deafening sound design, and breathless chase sequences.
Atmosphere: Carnahan skillfully turns a cramped house into a dramatic arena, using light and shadow to symbolize the honesty or deceit of the characters.
4. The Twist and Message (Spoiler Alert)
The ending is a major highlight, revealing that Dumars had secretly set a trap to find the “bad apple” in the bunch. The revelation about the traitor and the fact that the money had been swapped for old phone books is a stunning turn of events. The film concludes on a reflective note, asking the haunting question: “Are we the good guys?”
Summary: 8/10. The Rip is a testament to how a solid script combined with A-list star power can create a new crime classic on streaming platforms.
