Tim Conway made the world laugh. For decades, his comedic genius lit up living rooms across America, from The Carol Burnett Show to McHale’s Navy and even as the voice of Barnacle Boy on SpongeBob SquarePants. But behind the joy and laughter lay a life of complexity, family drama, and personal struggle — especially in his later years.
Now, through the words of his daughter, Kelly Conway, fans are finally learning about the private battles Conway faced in his final years — battles that were nothing like the comedy that made him famous.
A Childhood Surrounded by Laughter
Growing up with Tim Conway was like living in a “fun circus,” Kelly Conway recalls. Born to Mary Anne Dalton in 1961, Tim Conway’s first marriage produced six children and a household filled with humor, creativity, and an undeniable sense of joy. Encino, California, in the 1970s may have seemed ordinary, but for the Conway family, life was anything but.
“He wouldn’t come home and change personalities,” Kelly explains. “The games and circus atmosphere continued right at home! And it was a blast. I remember whenever we would go to the grocery store, he’d make it a competition. Whoever caught the most groceries I threw over the aisle got ten dollars. We all had a cart and circled the aisles scrambling.”
Being the only girl among five brothers, Kelly developed a unique bond with her father. “He was my best pal in the world. If I had a problem at school, he always found a way to make me feel better, even if it was something as simple as getting a hot dog together. I miss that so much.”
But Tim Conway was not just a father; he was a craftsman at heart. Kelly recounts that he owned a sewing machine and would make slipcovers, curtains, pillows, and even his own sport coat — all in a single day, all while maintaining his signature humor.

The Midwestern Roots of a Comedy Icon
Despite Hollywood fame, Conway never forgot his roots. “He always said if show business didn’t work out, he’d go back to a hardware store,” Kelly says. His Midwestern upbringing instilled humility, kindness, and a grounded approach to life — qualities that shaped both his personal life and professional career.
Even in his work, Conway pursued “clean fun.” He wanted humor that families could enjoy together, free from vulgarity or sexual innuendo. This philosophy helped make The Carol Burnett Show a timeless classic.
A Career Built on Collaboration and Genius
Tim Conway’s television legacy is inseparable from his collaboration with Carol Burnett. Kelly describes their relationship as a true friendship. Burnett, she explains, allowed Conway the freedom to improvise, to shine, and to “go crazy” in ways that produced some of television’s most iconic comedy moments.
“He didn’t need to stick to a script. She allowed him to shine and go crazy. That’s why they created so much magic on set together,” Kelly says.
From side-splitting sketches to legendary improvisation moments, Conway and Burnett’s work set the standard for variety television. His comedy transcended generations: while older audiences remember his classic sketches, younger viewers recognize his work from Disney projects and SpongeBob SquarePants.

The Heartbreaking Later Years
Behind the laughter, however, Conway faced serious challenges in his final years. In 2018, he was diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus, a brain disorder causing excess fluid in the brain’s ventricles. While a shunt provided temporary relief, the condition took a toll on him physically and mentally.
Family dynamics complicated matters further. Conway’s second wife, Charlene Conway, was granted conservatorship, effectively controlling his care. Kelly recounts how she was sometimes barred from seeing her father or speaking to his doctors, prompting a painful legal battle to ensure his well-being.
“I had to sue her for conservatorship. We won a restraining order to keep my dad in one place because he was being moved around too much. I wanted him at home where he was comfortable and happy. That’s all I wanted. Those were not the decisions being made, so I had to get lawyers involved,” Kelly explains.
Her advice for children of elderly or ailing parents resonates universally: advocate relentlessly. Know your rights. Push for the care your loved ones deserve.
Legacy and Love
Despite the pain of his final years, Tim Conway’s legacy remains untarnished. Fans worldwide continue to celebrate his work, from the timeless sketches of The Carol Burnett Show to his voice roles in children’s animation.
Kelly shares the outpouring of love her father received after his death in 2019 at age 85. “I heard from people who came from unhappy homes but were able to laugh because of my dad. It took some of the sadness away, knowing so many people loved him.”
Conway’s kindness extended beyond fans. Kelly recalls that he treated everyone with respect — from plumbers to directors — never allowing fame to affect his humanity.
A Memoir to Celebrate a Life of Laughter
Kelly Conway’s memoir, My Dad’s Funnier Than Your Dad: Growing Up with Tim Conway in the Funniest House of America, set to release on December 30, offers an intimate look into her father’s life. Through stories of mischief, family games, and behind-the-scenes tales from Hollywood, the memoir paints a portrait of a man who lived for joy, laughter, and the people around him.
From grocery store games to sewing masterpieces, from sketches that left audiences roaring to the quiet moments of fatherly love, the book captures the many dimensions of a man who was much more than a comedian.
The Personal Side of a Public Icon
Even as a public figure, Conway remained deeply private. Kelly recounts that he was humble, approachable, and deeply connected to his family. Divorce, legal battles, and illness could not overshadow the warmth he shared with his children and friends.
“He remained close. He ended up buying a house a mile from the house we grew up in. We used to ride our bikes back and forth. It was sad, but he always made time for us,” Kelly says.
His commitment to clean, family-friendly comedy allowed his humor to transcend generations, leaving a legacy that resonates in homes worldwide.
