Sheridan revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that when pitching the series, executives were adamant: they wanted Robert Redford as John Dutton. Sheridan even met Redford at the Sundance Film Festival, securing his agreement. “I call the senior vice president in charge of production and say, ‘I got him!’” Sheridan recalled. The response? “‘You got who?’ ‘Robert Redford.’ ‘What?!’ ‘You said if I got Robert Redford, you’d greenlight the show.’ And he says — you can’t make this up — ‘We meant a Robert Redford type.’”

Ultimately, the series moved forward with Kevin Costner as John Dutton, but Redford’s influence on Sheridan’s vision remained. His films shaped the visual and emotional landscape of Montana that Sheridan would carry into Yellowstone and now The Madison.
