A teenager convicted of killing a 70-year-old grandmother during a violent shopping centre robbery has appealed his 16-year jail term, claiming it is unjust.
The 17-year-old boy, who cannot be named due to being 16 at the time, fatally stabbed Ipswich woman Vyleen White in the heart as she was walking through Redbank Town Square shopping centre in February, 2024.

He then fled with her car keys, leaving her bleeding on the ground.
The court was told he planned to use the car in later robberies.
The boy pleaded guilty to her murder in 2025 and was sentenced in November that year to 16 years’ jail.
He was ordered to serve two thirds of the sentence, around nine years and seven months, before being paroled.
“Your actions on that evening, taking the life of another human being, have caused immense, indeed catastrophic, pain and suffering to her family,” the presiding Justice Helen Bowskill said to the boy at sentence.
“She was by all accounts a kind, caring, loving and devoted mother and grandmother.”

Following his sentence in November, Ms White’s family called out the court’s decision as being too lenient under the circumstances.
Premier David Crisafulli labelled the decision “not good enough” and said the government would consider the sentence.
On December 8, the boy lodged an appeal against the sentence decision.
The grounds for the appeal was heard in Brisbane on Tuesday before president Justice Debra Mullins and Justices John Bond and David Boddice.
The court reserved its decision for a later date.
