Horrific multi-vehicle pile-up in Melbourne: Four cars mangled, a 2-year-old girl k!:lled instantly, and a 62-year-old man arrested at his hospital bedside
A catastrophic traffic accident occurred in the West Melbourne area this past Wednesday afternoon, leaving a family in mourning and the public in shock. The pile-up involving four vehicles at the Dynon Road intersection, near the West Gate Tunnel exit, claimed the life of a two-year-old girl and left several others with serious injuries.
The Sequence of the Devastating Collision

According to Victoria Police Deputy Commissioner Robert Hill, the tragedy unfolded at approximately 4:30 PM. As vehicles were navigating the busy junction, the fourth vehicle, reportedly traveling at a high rate of speed, lost control and slammed into the third vehicle, which was waiting at a traffic signal. The force of the impact caused severe damage to the family car caught in the collision.
Commissioner Hill confirmed the identity and responsibility of the driver involved: “The fourth vehicle, travelling at speed, has collided with a third vehicle at a traffic control signal. A 62-year-old driver of that vehicle at this point of time [is] responsible for that crash.”
The Victims in the “Family Car”
The sudden death of the two-year-old girl at the scene has sparked a wave of profound sorrow. Reflecting on the gravity of the incident, Commissioner Robert Hill shared: “What a tragedy that a two-year-old in a family car perished in such circumstances.”
Beyond the loss of the toddler, the family sustained heavy casualties. The girl’s two brothers, aged four and 11 months, along with a 30-year-old female passenger, were rushed to the hospital. The four-year-old is currently in serious condition. The 30-year-old male driver of the family’s vehicle is also being treated at the hospital and remains in critical condition.
Legal Developments and Ongoing Investigation
Immediately following the incident, police deployed necessary investigative measures. The 62-year-old driver responsible for the crash was arrested at his bedside. He remains in the hospital under police guard, currently in stable condition.
As for the occupants of the other three vehicles, a 40-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman also sustained injuries. The two male drivers were hospitalized in serious but stable condition, while the female driver received medical treatment at the scene for minor injuries.
Currently, detectives from the Victoria Police force are working diligently to clarify the specific circumstances surrounding the collision. To ensure a comprehensive understanding of the scene, police are appealing for community assistance. They are particularly interested in locating the driver of a dark-colored Tesla that was traveling through the area at the time of the crash. While police emphasized that the Tesla was not involved in the collision itself, they believe its dashcam footage may contain crucial evidence to help resolve the remaining questions surrounding the case.
