Emergency crews, including cops, ambulance and coastguard teams, swooped on Plymouth Hoe at around 12.50pm.
Despite the best efforts of paramedics, the woman was sadly declared dead at the scene.
The popular pool was then cordoned off as investigations into the tragedy began.
It remained closed for the rest of the day, according to an announcement by managing firm Plymouth Active Leisure.
A statement on social media read: “Tinside Lido will remain closed for the rest of today following a serious medical incident this afternoon.
“We thank everyone for their understanding.”
Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed her death is not being treated as suspicious.
The force said: “We were called at 1.05pm following a report of a concern for welfare for a woman at Tinside Lido, Plymouth.
“Emergency services attended the scene.
“She was treated by paramedics but sadly the woman was pronounced deceased at the scene.
“Her death is not being treated as suspicious, and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”
A doctor also raced to the popular outdoor swimming centre, the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT) said.
In a statement, the service added: “We were called at 12:48hrs on Wednesday 2 September to an incident in Plymouth.
“We sent two double-crewed land ambulances, an operations officer, a rapid response vehicle and a doctor to the scene.”
