Meghan Markle’s absence from Britain stirs whispers of unresolved tensions. As King Charles awaits a reunion, the path seems anything but simple.

Meghan Markle has no affection for Britain, and a reunion between the Duchess of Sussex and King Charles will not be straightforward, according to royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams who spoke to GB News.
The Duchess has not returned to the UK since Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral in September 2022, while her children, Archie and Lilibet, last appeared in Britain earlier that year during the late Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations.
King Charles has only met his granddaughter, Princess Lilibet, once when she was just six months old. Prince Harry has made several solo trips to the UK over the last three years, while Meghan, Archie, and Lilibet have remained in the US.
Additional security could “open the door” for Meghan’s return, but hurdles remain
However, Prince Harry looks set to receive additional protection for himself and his family, with a review underway to determine whether the current provision is inadequate for the level of risk posed to the Sussexes. Additional security for Meghan while in the UK would “open the door” to her return, but it is not the only obstacle to a reunion with the Royal Family, according to Fitzwilliams.
He told GB News: “It would open the door, but if you look at the polls, her (Meghan’s) ratings are absolutely terrible. She is not popular with the British public.”
Meghan’s lack of affection for Britain a barrier to reunion
Fitzwilliams added, “Then there is the case that she does not appear to have any affection for Britain. That has never manifested itself. I cannot see Meghan coming to Britain before the Invictus Games because what would she do and why would she come? It is not going to be as simple as turning up and seeing King Charles.”
The Duke of Sussex’s Invictus Games will be hosted in Birmingham in 2027, and Prince Harry has already sent invitations to members of his Royal Family ahead of the event. Harry founded the Invictus Games over a decade ago while still a working royal, with the first games held in London in 2014.
No members of the Royal Family attended the anniversary event in 2024 at St Paul’s Cathedral, but the Invictus Games taking place in Birmingham could see UK-based royals attending the competition.

Birmingham chosen over Washington DC to host Invictus Games
Birmingham was chosen over Washington D.C., as the final destination on the shortlist, with the UK winning out over the US as the hosting nation.
Prince Harry praised Birmingham’s strong ties to the Armed Forces community, saying:
“We have no doubt the people of Birmingham will join in celebrating the unwavering respect and admiration we have for our veteran and service community, showing the world how their courage ignites hope and unites us all—something your city knows well.”
